Strength Training: Mastering the Foundations for Long Term Success

As a personal trainer, I am an advocate of strength training. Even if your daily routine involves rigorous activities like farm chores, I firmly believe in integrating a structured strength program into your life. However, the allure of popular workout trends often leads people to jump in without proper guidance. This approach can lead to more harm than good, emphasizing the crucial need for instruction when beginning any fitness regimen.

Beyond the flash of trending exercises lies crucial foundational elements–one of which is skeletal alignment.  Skeletal alignment refers to the optimal positioning of bones and joints in the body. Proper skeletal alignment facilitates efficient movement and weight distribution. This alignment impacts our posture, balance, and the body’s ability to handle load bearing activities.

Improving our alignment requires us to build awareness of how we move.  Without it, attempting exercises, especially when you have underlying pain or discomfort risks exacerbating issues. For instance, performing a squat with tightness in the back or hamstrings can aggravate problems or trigger compensatory movements, leading to strain in other areas.

The distinguishing factor of Better In Motion programs is the emphasis placed on awareness training and skeletal alignment before or in conjunction with beginning an

exercise program. Developing proficiency here enables control over movement tempos and enhances flexibility, minimizing the risk of injury and maximizing the benefits of strength training.

As the new year approaches, and with that countless resolutions for health and fitness, consider prioritizing your alignment and awareness of movement. Dedicating time to grasp these fundamental principles lays the groundwork for a sustainable, injury-free fitness journey.
